Showtime.al at Open Labs Albania

Open Labs presents showtime.al

showtime at Open Labs

Showtime.al is a relatively new website in Albanian dedicated to movies – series reviews and industry news. We are really excited by the project mainly due to the fact that they work with WordPress (the open source CMS) but also because they publish all their materials on a Creative Commons license. These are two of the elements that promote an Open Web and as you might know we are working hard on this issue here at Open Labs.

Join us this Saturday 26.01.2013 @ 17.00 if you are into movies, WordPress, Creative Commons and hanging out with cool people at your local hackerspace.

Wikipedia Workshop at Open Labs

Wikipedia Workshop ne Open Labs

Wikipedia is a collaboratively edited, multilingual, free Internet encyclopedia supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 24 million articles, over 4.1 million in the English Wikipedia alone, have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world. Almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site, and it has about 100,000 active contributors.
It has become the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, having an estimated 365 million readers worldwide.
As of January 2013, there are editions of Wikipedia in 285 languages including Albanian language.

At Open Labs hackerspace we recognize the importance of one of the most important, open and collaborative tools of the internet age and celebrate Wikipedia.org 11th birthday with the first event of this kind in Tirana, Albania. The event will have the character of a workshop which means that if you bring your laptop with you you’ll have more fun.

We will create and edit Wikipedia articles in Albanian for as long as we can!

Creative Commons: Celebrating 10 Years at Open Labs

Creative Commons 10

Creative Commons 10Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators.

An easy to understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright, but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an “all rights reserved” copyright management with a “some rights reserved” management employing standardized licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low overhead and cost copyright management regime, profiting both copyright owners and licensees. Wikipedia uses one of these licenses.

The organization was founded in 2001 by Lawrence Lessig, Hal Abelson, and Eric Eldred with support of the Center for the Public Domain.

At Open Labs we support Creative Commons throughout our events, our website (which is published on CC license) and initiatives such as TED talks in Albanian are introducing Creative Commons for the first time to the Albanian public with a party for the 10 years of the initiative. Come to our place, talk to us and learn more about Creative Commons and their importance in our society!

Join us if you are a lawyer, a public domain enthusiast, a remixer or a creative guy!
